I Think BiggerPockets Made a Mistake

June 30, 2010 by Scott Costello 13 Comments

When I was first getting starting in Real Estate Investing, reading everything I could find on the subject, I would routinely search for blogs that would show me what it was actually like to be an investor.  At the time one of the most popular and well regarded blogs of this type was Steph Davis’ flipthiswholesaler.net (flipthiswholesaler.blogspot.com at the time).  In my mind there was none better at portraying the daily life of an investor.

I wanted to find more like that and found this blog post on a site called Biggerpockets that listed the top 35 real estate investing blogs on the net.  It was a great list and lead me to some other outstanding blogs but that list has seen better days as many of the sites have been forgotten, closed down or just changed focus.

About a year ago Joshua Dorkin, founder of BiggerPockets, updated that post asking for people to recommend some top blogs because he was going to revisit the list.  I was happy to nominate FlipthisWholesaler.net and 123Flip.com (J Scott’s blog).

Yesterday the new list came out with the updated Top 20 Real Estate Investing Blogs and, if you’ve been reading rei blogs for a while, some very recognizable blogs made the list

  1. 1-2-3 Flip
  2. BawldGuy Talking
  3. The BiggerPockets Blog – As if you didn’t know it would make the list ;)
  4. Build Bankroll
  5. Flip This Wholesaler
  6. Good Faith Investing
  7. House Flipping Blog
  8. Life as Real Estate Investors
  9. Live and Flip
  10. Llenrock Commercial Real Estate Finance Blog
  11. REI Tips
  12. Shaun’s Real Estate Adventures

And then there are 8 honorable mention sites to round out the top 20 and on closer examination I think I uncovered a typo or something.  Take a look for yourself…

Honorable Mentions:

  • Adventures in Mobile Homes
  • A Student of the Real Estate Game
  • The Blog Of Matt Rosen
  • Flipping Smart
  • Goin’ Flippin’ Crazy
  • Mobile Home Madness
  • Struggling to Get Started
  • The Successful Landlord Blog

Yea, some how Struggling Investor got put in there.  After 200+ blogs that Joshua reviewed, I can understand the mistake.  However it got on the list I’m proud to be there and am just honored that people are actually reading what I have to say.   Thanks Joshua and Bigger Pockets for the honor!

Scott you're so cute! lol You know you deserve to be on that list or at least I HOPE you know.

You provide such great content for probates and especially for folks working a normal “job” and the struggles you face with fitting in real estate to your 9 to 5 world.

Keep up the great work and try to make the MAIN list next year with me bud! lol

Ever since we spoke I have been a fly on your blog post wall. The only mistake that Joshua made was not putting you in one of the slots in the top 12. Keep doing what you are doing.

Congrats, Scott! I don't think it was a typo, you've got a great blog and have built a nice community here. What I like about your blog is that it's got a fresh and honest perspective that many can relate to. Also, I think I can learn a lot from you (as well as Shae!) about the technology stuff. There's so much out there, and it's nice to read your technology posts as they come up. Keep up the good work, I enjoy reading your blog very much!

This post should have been: BIGGERPOCKETS MADE A MISTAKE – THEY DIDN'T PUT ME IN THE TOP 10. :) And then write about what you're going to do to be a top 10 REI blogger for the 2011 list.

And while we're at it – let's rename the blog to be STRUGGLING TO SPEND ALL THE FREAKING MONEY I AM (Going to be) MAKING IN REAL ESTATE

    or something like that!! :)

I've probably been OD'ing on personal development books lately (Power of Focus, Think and Grow Rich, Maximum Achievement… etc…) but all I keep reading from these big name guys is to have a clear vision of your success, frame things positively and carefully label the important things in your life to all be structured around your vision for the future.

You're doing so awesome … and I bet you could accelerate your success if you started to rename things and give them positive labels and reframe some of the experiences.

Of course this is just the opinion of one Broad that probably shouldn't be ranting on people's blogs at 10:30pm at night on Friday. But I heard all the cool chicks are hanging on your blog on Friday nights so that is where I knew I had to be. :)

CONGRATS SCOTT!! You deserve to be on that list. Your blog is content packed, genuine and fun to read.
