30DC – Day 3 – Google Rankings

September 1, 2009 by Scott Costello 9 Comments

30DC3If you want to do well with internet marketing your website has to show up on one of the first few pages of Google.   Where your site appears is called your Google Rank.  It’s not the page you appear on it’s your ranking.  The higher the page rank number the better.

In the third day of the 30 day challenge we went over how Google figures out which websites appear on the top few pages for a particular search phrase.

There is this thing called “Googlebot” which is a programming script that will Crawl (i.e. search) your website and determine how relevant your website is to the search phrase.  There are a few main factors that it tries to determine…

Content. To figure out the content of your website the googlebot will look at Titles, Descriptions, headings and some other lesser information.  This can also be refereed to as “On-Page Factors”.

BackLinks. Google will also check how popular your website is by checking backlinks (back links are links from other websites back to yours).  If your information is of high-quality then people will link to your site.  Other factors go into

Age of your domain. The longer you have been around the more Google will trust your information.

I will say that in day 3 they rely heavily on Market Samurai and it really does make the entire process of comparing your competitors easy.   There are other tools however that can do the same thing but with a little more work like the Firefox plugin SeoQuake.

The reason why you want to study your competition is that you can determine what keywords they use to be successful as well as give yourself something to compare to.

My Real Estate Investing Take…

What I found out is that my main competition for people searching out New Jersey Probate are county government sites and some lawyer sites.  I don’t see any investor sites which to me is a good thing.

For the top ten competitors I listed above here is what I know

  • Overall the age of the competition is on average 6.5 years old
  • page rank of between 0 and 5.
  • Most have less then 20 backlinks. 1 has 260 and another has 22,600(wow!)
  • Only three of the sites are really On-Page optimized.

Lots of good information here and i’m going to start to use it for this blog to see if I can reach out to other people.

    Scott,

I’m following your 30dc with interest. I have heard of this for several years, but thought it was for the sale of internet products and saw little relevance in RE. It may be worth my time to take the 30dc. Thanks.

Even if it doesn’t directly relate to RE i’m sure going to be able to pull some great strategies out of it. I’ve already learned a lot just from the first 5 days. Yes they do refer you to tools, while free during your 30 day challenge (free trials and such), will cost you money if you wish to keep them. These tools however are not necessary to use and you could do the same things with out them. When I right my daily updates I try to include a link to the alternative method/tool that would be free for life. I will say though that the Market Samurai software is pretty damn good so far. Big time saver.

I have been working on a similar strategy with my blog. How fast I can rank compared to the competition is amazing. Many of the sites are governments run and been around a long time.

How is your strategy working? The site I’m working on has yet to be indexed but It will soon once I create the sitemap and add it to google webmaster tools.
